What, except respect and prayers of gratitude, can you offer to the sun for all that it has given you in your life and to all of life and creation?
This video provides a brief overview of the Surya Namaskar–Sun Salutations–to prepare you for practicing the flow beyond the physical postures.

As you move forward, please keep the following in mind:
- As sun child birthed from sun and Earth elements, you need the sun for wellness on all levels. The sun directly effects your emotions, and deficiencies in the winter in some regions of the world, for example, can often lead to depression. Always ensure that every day moving forward, you are getting enough sunlight.
- In the same way that plants create energy from the sun, our bodies create vital vitamin D from the sun as well, which is a key component for the building blocks that are needed to form and sustain our bodies. Many are often deficient on vitamin D simply because they are not getting enough sunlight. The best time to expose yourself to the sun to not get too many harmful rays that counteract the benefits of sun exposure is, conveniently the best time to practice the Surya Namaskar, early in the morning as the sun is rising or late afternoon/early evening as the sun is getting ready to set.
- The sun is the catalyst for organic life, and all of physical life is dependent on the ball of glowing energy at the center of our galaxy. Plants receiving energy from the sun created the foundation for our existence here on Earth simply because they engage in photosynthesis and release oxygen as their waste product. Oxygen would not exist in our atmosphere without the sun, which means that we would not exist without the sun.
- Everything, down to your body and your entire being is tied to the sun from the elemental to the energetic and most physical level. From your food, to your mood, you are connected to the sun.
- The sun is always present, it is visibly seen through life that exists around, as, and within you even when the part of the Earth that you are on is facing away from the sun based on the Earth’s orbit in space. Even at night, our planet’s oldest satellite, the moon, often reflects the sun back to us in phases and this important source of physical energy never truly goes away (at least it won’t for a long time).
